Heavy-Duty Power Cable Built for the Harshest Conditions
The 6mm 3-core SWA cable features three individual copper conductors, color-coded brown (live), blue (neutral), and green/yellow (earth) for easy identification. This multi-core design makes it ideal for single-phase power distribution across residential, commercial, and industrial settings.
Superior Protection Through Triple-Layer Armor
The cable comprises stranded copper conductors with XLPE insulation, a bedding of PVC, and a steel wire armoured layer, which adds mechanical protection, allowing the cable to be buried directly and serve as an earth conductor. XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) insulation provides exceptional thermal and electrical insulating capability, enhancing safety and keeping processes efficient in applications with high temperatures and stress.
Unlike standard PVC cables, XLPE has greater ductile strength and impact resistance, and will not melt or drip in temperatures up to 90°C. The cable offers durability and proper resistance to extreme conditions aside from electrical performance, owing to the XLPE insulation.
Why Armoring Matters: Protection You Can Count On
Spiral-wound galvanized steel wire provides 360° protection against external impacts, crushing, rodent bites and construction damage. This physical protection layer is critical for installations where cables face mechanical stress, moisture exposure, and environmental hazards.
Proven for Demanding Applications
6mm 3-core SWA cable is generally used for garden lighting, street lighting, and would also be used to power industrial ring mains and power radial circuits. The cable is designed for robust protection in underground and outdoor power applications.
The steel wire armor protects the cores inside the cable which makes it suitable for direct burial into the ground. SWA cables are particularly well-suited for underground installations, where they are buried directly in the ground or laid within conduit systems. The cable can handle:
- Direct ground burial without additional conduit protection
- Moderate loads through its 6mm² cross-sectional area, suitable for powering outbuildings, garden rooms, and workshops
- Fixed power distribution in residential, commercial, and light industrial installations where mechanical protection is required
- Solar panel-to-grid connections and renewable energy systems
- Outdoor lighting and security systems
- Industrial machinery and equipment circuits
Long-Lasting, Low-Maintenance Performance
The earth core in a 3-core armoured cable serves as a safety grounding mechanism for potential faults, offering protection against electrical leakage and reducing shock hazards. Armoured cables are designed for long-term use, and under proper conditions and maintenance, they can last up to 30 years or more, providing reliable service throughout their lifespan.
The XLPE insulation is resistant to a number of different fluids, chemicals and has good heat stability, as well as being UV resistant. The outer sheath, typically made of PVC, provides additional insulation and protection against environmental factors such as moisture, chemicals, and UV radiation, enhancing the cable's resistance to abrasion and corrosion.
Compliance and Safety Standards
Compliance with British Standards is essential because it guarantees that the installation of a 6mm 3-core SWA armoured cable is performed accurately while meeting safety standards and legal regulations, minimizing electrical installation-associated risks.
Professional Installation Considerations
Armoured cables require specific Cable Glands (typically BW for indoor or CW for outdoor/weatherproof), and the gland must clamp securely onto the armour wires to ensure earth continuity. Proper termination with compatible gland kits ensures the cable performs safely and reliably.
