Kelvin Scale
Think of it as the "vibe" control for your room. Here is a quick guide to help you buy the right bulbs for the right spaces.
💡 The Kelvin Scale Breakdown
The scale generally runs from 1,000K to 10,000K. Lower numbers are "warm" (yellow/orange), and higher numbers are "cool" (blue/white).
| Kelvin Range | Color Description | Common Name | Best For... |
| 2000K – 2400K | Amber / Candlelight | Extra Warm White | Decorative lighting, lanterns, "Edison" bulbs. |
| 2700K – 3000K | Soft Yellow | Warm White | Bedrooms, living rooms, and cozy restaurants. |
| 3500K – 4100K | Neutral White | Cool White | Kitchens, bathrooms, and vanity mirrors. |
| 5000K – 6500K | Crisp Blue-White | Daylight | Garages, workshops, offices, and reading nooks. |
1. Warm White (2700K - 3000K)
This is the "classic" light bulb look. It mimics the old incandescent bulbs we grew up with.
-
The Vibe: Relaxing, cozy, and intimate.
-
Pro Tip: Use these in areas where you want to wind down. It makes wood tones and warm paint colors (reds, oranges) pop.
2. Neutral / Cool White (3500K - 4100K)
This is the "clean" light. It doesn't have the heavy yellow tint of warm bulbs, but it isn't harsh like a hospital wing.
-
The Vibe: Energetic, balanced, and productive.
-
Pro Tip: Excellent for the kitchen or bathroom where you need to see things clearly without the "morning blues" of daylight bulbs.
3. Daylight (5000K - 6500K)
This mimics the high-contrast light of the sun at noon. It is very blue-heavy.
-
The Vibe: High-alert, clinical, and intense.
-
Pro Tip: Great for "task lighting." Use it in a craft room to see true colors, or in a garage to spot fine details. Avoid using these in bedrooms, as the blue light can mess with your sleep cycle.
🛠️ Shopping Tips
-
Check for "Tunable" LEDs: If you can't decide, look for bulbs labeled CCT Selectable. These have a small switch on the bulb (or an app) that lets you toggle between 2700K, 4000K, and 5000K.
-
Consistency is Key: Try not to mix Kelvin temperatures in the same room. A 2700K lamp next to a 5000K overhead light will make the room look messy and can cause eye strain.
-
Don't Ignore CRI: While Kelvin tells you the color of the light, CRI (Color Rendering Index) tells you how accurately that light shows the colors of your furniture. Look for a CRI of 90+ for the best results.
